Mii Channel Originally for the DS

Mii channel on the DSSo it turns out that the original Mii channel had been developed for the Nintendo DS.

In this page from the Japanese Wii.com site, Hisashi Nogami explains how the Mii Channel was indeed developed first for the DS (image to the right). Supposedly, Miyamoto had heard about the new system for creating and working with gamers’ avatars and requested that the system be developed for the Wii.

It turns out that Miyamoto had actually been trying to create a Mii-like system for two decades, beginning with the NES. At the recent GDC conference, Miyamoto explained that they had created a 2d version of a Mii-like platform for the NES but that the avatars couldn’t be used in games. The next version was for the N64DD, in which gamers could actually create an avatar from a photo of his or herself. And supposedly the avatars could then be incorporated into games. But this version was also scrapped.

So looks like it took the Wii to get a Mii!
